WELCOME TO SOUTHWEST MEDICAL AID - TUCSON, ARIZONA
Medical Mission Trip 2013 - Guayaquil (pronounce Y-A-Kil) - Duran, Ecuador
Southwest Medical Aid is a non-profit organization assisting families - women and children in Tucson. Its motto is "Finding Abundance. Filling Need." SMA collects and recycles unused medical supplies from clinics and doctor's offices. If unused supplies are not recycled they would end up in the landfill. SMA always needs basic first-aid items (i.e., ointments, bandages, dressings, gauze, tape, etc.), equipment (i.e., wheelchairs, crutches, shower chairs), volunteers and fund-raising assistance. (Go to #11. How to Donate button if you wish to donate money or items.)
SMA donated more than 3.5 million dollars in supplies, as of September 1, 2013, on an annual budget of less than $45,000, funded by donations and staffed 100% by volunteers. One of our goals through this web site is to fund-raise, and spread the word and good works of SMA.
What's not claimed for use in Tucson is distributed elsewhere around the world as referred by 501(3)(c) charitable groups. When selecting a location for a medical mission the two most important factors are: the best and safest weather conditions and how we can serve those in need. SMA only goes where we can serve poor people.
One requisite of each mission is to leave behind in each country some type of sustainable effort such as a greenhouse, houses built, roofs on schools, school and churches painted, and this year in 2013 a new playground.
The locations of mission trips are determined in conjunction with a contact person or organization who is aware of the needs of specific areas in the world. The South Tucson Lions Club and the Tanque Verde Valley Lions Club have been a big asset in client identification who need our services and supplies. Rotary International has also been an asset.
The liaison for this year's Ecuador trip was Patricia Hanchi, MD. She lived in Tucson and is currently living in New York. Dr. Patricia participated in the 2012 Honduras mission trip. She is a native of Guayaquil and a friend of Bishop Anibal Nieto of the Diocese of San Jacinto de Yaguachi, Ecuador.
This is the 8th medical mission trip for SMA and the largest number of traveling volunteers to date (26):
2007 - Guatemala
2008 - Guatemala
2008 - Alamos/Mexico
2009 - Honduras
2010 - Peru
2011 - Belize
2012 - Honduras
2013 - Ecuador
